Pine Cove Family Camp 2011–Part 3

As promised, today is Part 3 of our time at Pine Cove Family Camp where I’ll highlight how Pine Cove has played an instrumental and key role in our family’s life.

Each summer, our family goes to Pine Cove Family Camp the same week, “Week 7,” as well as many other families.  As a result, we’ve had the opportunity to develop lasting friendships with the same families year in and year out, as well as adding new families each summer.  This has proved to be one of the greatest blessings of camp…the people.

There is something sacred about Pine Cove, hard to describe in words, yet unmistakeable while you are there.  Kindred spirits, authentic relationships, masks removed, laptops and televisions left behind, and over the course of 6 days, hearts thawed.

Personally, when I arrive at camp every summer, it is as if little parts of me, my heart, and my soul are scattered all over the place…then slowly but surely, something shifts while we are there…like Jesus lovingly steps over the messy parts of me and gently places me back together.   ‘Cause let’s be honest, life is messy.  Relationships are messy.  Parenting and marriage are messy.  But Pine Cove has become for us a place of rest.  Of restoration.  Of reconnection.
The Caribou Cafe is one of the places we can reconnect with friends…specialty coffee drinks, peace and quiet, and no kids allowed:).
Another favorite aspect of Family Camp is that we get fabulous teaching a few times during the week.  Our speaker this year was Pete Briscoe from Bent Tree Bible Fellowship in Dallas and
Let’s just say…Amazing.  Authentic.  Applicable.  Not to mention, funny.  Tells it like it is.  Loved this about him.  If you’re interested in hearing the talks, which I highly recommend, then click HERE to be directed to “Week 7 Pete Briscoe Downloads.”   Pete’s messages really struck me deeply, and I’m eager to see what God is up to in this crazy, mixed-up heart of mine.

Yet another invaluable asset to Pine Cove are the counselors.  College students from around the country who are selectively chosen to serve, to love, and to serve some more.  Oh, and to be wild and crazy and over the top:)  They even have silly “camp names” and don’t reveal their real names til the end of the week.
Our family got to know “P is for Pretty” (Lauree) really well and we miss her!
Lainey’s not-so-little group, called the “June Bugs,” with their counselors.
John David and his “Wild Woods” group with their counselor, “Catch Phrase.”
Maddie and her “Wild Woods” group with their counselor, “Righty.”

At the end of the week, the counselors issue “CQ’s,” or Character Quality certificates to each child.  Life-giving words are so important, and we love this aspect of Pine Cove partnering with us as parents to encourage our kids.

Probably the most significant event of our Pine Cove 2011 week was Maddie getting baptized!  Several children and two adult friends of ours were baptized alongside Maddie this summer…all from families who have been coming Week 7 for years…a very special day!  We are thrilled to have had her baptized at a place so special to our family and to Maddie.

The leadership and staff at Pine Cove have done an excellent job of helping to carry out the mission statement of Pine Cove…”to be used by God to transform the lives of people for His purposes and His glory.”  We really see Pine Cove as a “partner” of sorts…partnering with us in parenting, marriage, and living out our faith in a fallen world.

But secondly, I can only imagine how good it was getting to hear Pete Briscoe!!! His and his parents’ ministry has blessed me so much!! My mother introduced me to who Jill Briscoe was! Thankfully!! I get her quarterly magazine and listen to their podcasts. I never ever walk away unchanged!!!! They have let the Lord really use their family!

    Have a great day!
