Over the last few days, I have been putting together a new Summer Mantel (which I’ll show you Friday!). I went on a search for a natural focal point, and I came across a Burlap Rag Wreath at Down to Earth Style. While she created hers for Christmas, I knew it would be perfect for a beach-themed mantel!
Below you will see how easy it is to make a Burlap Rag Wreath, and I used Down To Earth Style‘s tutorial as my guide.
This project is super simple! It does take a little bit of time, but it’s mindless. Easy to work on amidst kids home for summer, a TV show, or while visiting with a friend! I also recommend working on a surface you can vacuum. The burlap sheds as you work.
Supplies needed:
3 yards *burlap (I used ivory)
12-inch Wire Wreath Form
Scissors
Measuring Tape
*FYI…I purchased burlap at Hancock’s and learned they have mobile coupons via their homepage. You can also bring in competitor’s coupons such as Hobby Lobby or Joann’s, which they will honor. Saves you money!
First, cut out 12″x1″ strips of burlap. I actually kept count for you, and used around 220 strips:) They do not have to be exact.
Starting on the inside ring, tie each strip in a simple knot, as shown above.
Continue along the ring, sliding each strip down, and tying as many strips to each section as will fit!
A sneak peak at my new summer mantel! I used invisible fishing line to hang this wreath, but a burlap “ribbon” or other coordinating ribbon will work, too!
Fluff the wreath and even it out by cutting back any strips that are too long.
Easy!
What a great wreath this would make for 4th of July in red burlap. Or pick another color to compliment your seasonal decor. I will keep this ivory one out year-round!

Came over from Gotta Create. I already know I will love your mantel – I can see what looks like an old window peeking from behind the wreath. Love the wreath. I have made several. You need to get a rotary cutter and a self-healing mat to cut those strips -much easier on the hands!

wow! i love this – i’m already envisioning it in different colors of burlap for the different seasons. 🙂 i always use traditional burlap for fall but i love that you’re planning on using this lighter color all year long.
i hope you’ll pop by for a visit!

Your wreath is simply pretty! I have done the burlap wreath and the rag wreath, but not a burlap rag wreath so I am definitely trying this! I think it would be perfect for a beachy themed mantel too! Thanks for linking up!

Is there anything we can spray to stop the burlap from fraying?
Amanda says
To Anonymous: I am not aware of anything that can keep it from fraying. I did realize that if I cut the strips too thin, sometimes they frayed into almost nothing:) but overall it worked fine and it’s just a “messy” wreath. From a distance, the strings are really unnoticeable.

Hey! How long did it take you to do this?
