There are 100 ways to prepare baked beans, and chances are, your favorite version is the way your mom made them. Mine, too!
We recently went to a cookout, though, where delicious baked beans that are different from mine were served, and my friend Hannah was sweet to share the ingredients. I say “ingredients,” not “recipe,” because like most Southern cooks, much of what we prepare is by heart or by taste! These baked beans boast BBQ sauce and ground beef, making them a hearty side dish full of great flavor.
I followed Hannah’s instructions with a few adaptations to come up with the following recipe. Adjust ingredients to your liking, but this gives you a place to start!
Southern Style BBQ Baked Beans
Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
3 (16oz) cans Campbell’s Pork and Beans
1/2 lb. ground sirloin, cooked and crumbled
1/2 small onion, chopped small
1/2 cup BBQ sauce
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
2 T. honey
1 1/2 t. ketchup
1 t. mustard
salt and pepper to taste
6 slices bacon, uncooked
Cook ground sirloin with chopped onion until meat is no longer pink. Drain and set aside.
In a medium bowl, combine beans (undrained), meat mixture, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, ketchup, and mustard. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix gently.
Spray a 9×13 baking dish with Pam. Spread bean mixture evenly into baking dish. Arrange uncooked bacon across the top of the beans.
Cover with foil and bake at 250 degrees for about 2 hours, then uncover and set oven to “Broil” at 450 degrees. Broil for 4-5 minutes or until bacon begins to crisp.
Remove from oven and serve with a slotted spoon.
Serves 8-10.
