Reflecting on 2012 and Looking Forward to 2013

Happy New Year to you!

There is something invigorating about the flip of the calendar to a brand new year.  I eagerly welcome 2013 and will shortly recap 2012 today…

2012 was a mixed year for me and for our family.  Not a bad year, just a hard year.  The inevitable challenges of raising a family (when frankly, it feels like we’re swimming upstream against the crazy culture we live in), staying well-connected as a couple, and acknowledging that some years are just plain harder than others.

Kelly’s short list of questions reflecting on the New Year caught my eye…

1. What are you most thankful for?

* Health.  Amidst devastating diagnoses and health challenges we’ve witnessed this year in the lives of friends, aquaintances, and stories passed along, I am thankful for our family’s health.  Wow, 2012 brought health crisis to so many around us.  Even as I write these words, faces come to mind that desperately need the healing touch of God.

*Also so thankful for new beginnings and fresh starts.  And to quote Beth Moore on Twitter yesterday…”Glory to a great and merciful God who knew we’d need lots of new starts.”  Again, 2012 was not a terrible year, but more often than not, I know my heart wandered, and as usual, I attempted to do so much in my own strength rather than relying on Him.  That plan never goes well.

2. What were the highlights of 2012 for you?

*A family trip to the Smoky Mountains in March.  Just us and good food and movies and a cabin in the mountains and no internet!  Perhaps no internet was the key to a genuinely terrific time together!  We are still talking about that trip!

*Watching the blog grow and change and MOVE to a new home.  On several occasions, I may have said it was far from a highlight, more like a nightmare, but big hurdles were overcome, and I eagerly look forward to 2013 here at the blog!

*Pine Cove Family Camp is always a high.  Click the link to read more about our favorite place on earth!

3. What are you hoping for in 2013?

A real live vacation with my husband without kids.

4. What were some of your favorites of 2012? (Clothes, movies, songs, TV shows, )

Rock Star Skinny jeans from Old Navy.  Emi Jay Hair Ties for my everyday ponytail. DVR’d episodes of The Office on Thursday nights with my hubby.  Books–The Healing by Jonathan O’Dell and The Heart Mender by Andy Andrews.  Both linger in your soul.  Jesus Calling daily devotional  (a favorite for years!). Lady Antebellum. Eli Young Band. Instagram.  Pinterest.

5. Who was God to you in 2012?

I felt like a crazy person answering this question, as two different emotions immediately surfaced.  Near.  God has been near.  He has clearly worked on my behalf and showed me favor in so many areas of my life this past year, answering extremely specific prayers.  Yet, He felt equally distant.  Like I was fending for myself in several poignant struggles throughout the year.  I quickly surmised that it was me that had been distant and disengaged from Him.  He was near and aware and active like He always is, loving me well through my husband, giving me strength as a mama on the days that felt crushing, working behind the scenes in the blog, in my marriage, in parenting.  Thankful that although my heart strays, His does not.

Looking forward to 2013, I pray this is our best year yet as a family.  I pray this for you, as well!

How was your 2012?  What are you most looking forward to in 2013?  Thank you, thank you for reading the blog.  You are an important part of this little space!  Happy New Year!

  1. Thanks I needed that;)
    Praying for us all

  2. Thanks so much for stopping by today and pinning some projects and thanks for following along on Facebook. I will be doing the same thing as soon as I finish writing this comment 😉 I loved reading through your recap of 2012 and what you hope to accomplish in 2013. My answers would be very similar to yours. It’s a delicate balance, isn’t it? Trusting the Lord with everything and feeling like you’ve got to do everything on your own. I struggle in that area a lot. Anyway, I am happy to “meet” you and look forward to seeing all your fun projects. Have a wonderful week!

  3. I love this post! thank you for your transparency and for reminding me that “although my heart strays, His does not.” so well said. 🙂
